Move!

weighingAs expected, I gained about 2 kilograms over the holidays. It was the combination of eating more than I usually did and not working out. Last boxing session was on the 29th of December and I haven’t gone back to the gym since then; I haven’t done any deliberate exercising. “Balanced” meals consisted of everything from fried chicken to some kind of really greasy broth. Let’s not even talk about those desserts! I just had the lousy idea to weigh myself this evening — although so-called experts say that you shouldn’t weigh yourself in the evening; they suggest that we do so instead immediately after peeing in the morning — and what the scales said confirmed what I had been dreading the past 2 weeks. In fact, it was a surprise that I had gained just2 kilograms.

I find it surprising that we’re only 3 days into the new year. It felt like I had broken all the unwritten fitness resolutions already. First, I was supposed to go back to the gym yesterday, but for some reason (including the fact that I didn’t want to inconvenience myself), I had to skip it. Ditto for earlier today. It’s only the 3rd day of the year and I had loaded up on all the excuses already! The good news is, there is still the rest of the year to make up for my first-day lapses.

workout painMy friends and I have experimented with various workout videos. Being more predisposed to eating than moving, we realize that the regimen that we’re going to stick to has to be something that will give us more pleasure than pain. I’ve probably had them all in my DVD player — Tae-bo, Hip Hop Abs, Jane Fonda, Carmen Electra, the works. I would give myself a pat on the back for finishing a session but for some reason, when it was time to get back to moving with the video, something in me would recoil and I could only surmise that it was because, deep down, I didn’t really feel any pleasure while I was doing it.

Zumba-Dance-WorkoutMaybe I should have been more vigilant in my quest but it’s better to start now than to postpone it to some other future time, right? I will still indulge — now, that’s a great word to use for exercise — in my favorite stress-releasing outlet (boxing) and I might occasionally try something that I’ve failed at in the past (running), but I’m also on a quest to find something to do at home or anywhere I feel the fancy to move without having to worry whether I have any equipment or am wearing proper outfit. The first thing that I’m going to try doing every day is dancing, but won’t I have to worry about having some music for that? I just might have to invent some workout called Dancing Sans Music. Some deaf people can dance wonderfully without hearing anything, why not I?

So, for this week, dancing it is! Not Zumba, Bellydancing or any kind of structured dance movement, but just moving (to music, if available) with wild abandon! Just writing it already feels exciting! I will keep you posted on how it goes. Wish me luck!
